Hibiki whiskey seattle8/16/2023 ![]() ![]() Sadly that doesn't describe things at present. There was a brief window of a few years when it was available, affordable, and very good, and good in ways that were going out of fashion in scotch. So multiple different opinion influencers in the world of scotch started lavishing praise on Japanese whiskies roughly a decade ago or a bit more, right before the pinch really hit in terms of the current bottle shortage. To add to the stories being told in other comments here, IMHO part of the appeal of this style which helped build publicity for Japanese whiskies and contribute to present levels of demand is that this balanced type of whisky appealed to an older generation of whisky critics & writers, not only Jim Murray, but also Ian Buxton, Dave Broom & others, who came up in an era when this style was more common in scotch, but has since been eclipsed by demand for more aggressive & unbalanced styles of single malts, especially peat monsters & sherry bombs. So extreme scarcity of aged stocks today generates hype & bottle chasing.Īs for flavors, "smooth" isn't a bad way to put it, more experienced drinkers might say that these whiskies are well balanced, meaning the different flavors & aromas work together well, nothing stands out in dramatic contrast to other notes, and they generally are not strong or aggressive in character. Basically they made next to nothing in the way of whisky for several years, and took time to ramp their production volumes back up when demand started to recover from its nadir in 2007. is extremely low right now because back in the early 2000's the demand for Japanese whisky was so low that several distilleries closed and the large players Suntory and Nikka survived in part by effectively mothballing their distilleries. What’s the hype? Is it the flavor profile or smoothness?įirst off, people always want what they can't have, and the volume of bottles, especially the age-stated releases like Yamazaki 12, Hibiki 12, etc. If you really want to link to your own channel, blog or website make sure to include substantial original content in the post itself or else it will likely be removed.Ĭhoose your flair by clicking the (edit) button directly above this section It is recommended to upload videos directly, to avoid inconvenience.
